Running Google Ads But Not Getting Leads Here's What's Probably Going Wrong

If you’ve put money into Google Ads and the leads just aren’t showing up, you’re not alone — this is easily the most common thing we hear from business owners before they come to us. And honestly, it’s rarely because Google Ads “doesn’t work.” It’s usually one or two fixable things quietly draining the budget.

We’ve run campaigns for local businesses, e-commerce stores, and service providers across Gurgaon and beyond, and the same handful of mistakes keep showing up. So let’s go through them.

You’re targeting too broad — or too narrow

This is the big one. A lot of businesses set up a campaign, throw in a bunch of keywords related to their industry, and hope for the best. But Google Ads doesn’t reward “broad and hopeful” — it rewards relevance.

If you’re a plumber in Gurgaon bidding on the keyword “plumber,” you’re competing with every plumber in India, paying for clicks from people three states away who were never going to call you. Flip side — if your targeting is too narrow, you might be sitting there with an approved campaign and barely any impressions because nobody’s searching those exact terms.

The fix is somewhere in between: specific enough to attract people who actually want what you offer, broad enough that there’s real search volume behind it. Location targeting matters here too — if you only serve Gurgaon and Delhi NCR, your ads shouldn’t be showing up for someone searching from Mumbai.

Your landing page doesn’t match the ad

This one trips up more businesses than you’d think. Someone clicks your ad for “affordable website design,” and lands on your homepage — which talks about five different services, has no clear next step, and definitely doesn’t mention pricing or the offer that got them to click in the first place.

People don’t dig around. If the page doesn’t immediately confirm they’re in the right place, they’re gone in a few seconds — and you’ve paid for that click either way. A good landing page for a Google Ads campaign usually does one job only: match the promise in the ad, and make it obvious what to do next (call, fill a form, book a call — pick one, not all three).

No clear call-to-action

We see this a lot with website redesigns too, not just ads — a page full of good information, but no obvious “here’s what to do now.” If someone’s ready to enquire and your form is buried at the bottom of the page, or your phone number isn’t visible without scrolling, you’re losing leads that were genuinely interested.

Keep it simple. One strong CTA, visible without much scrolling, repeated if the page is long. “Get a Free Quote,” “Book a Consultation,” whatever fits — just make it impossible to miss.

You’re not tracking conversions properly

Here’s an uncomfortable truth: a lot of businesses running Google Ads have no real idea which keywords or ads are actually bringing in leads versus which ones are just burning budget. Without conversion tracking set up correctly, you’re basically flying blind — Google’s algorithm can’t optimize toward what’s working because it doesn’t know what “working” looks like.

Setting up proper tracking (form submissions, calls, WhatsApp clicks, whatever counts as a lead for your business) isn’t optional if you actually want the campaign to improve over time. It’s one of the first things we check when we take over an underperforming account, and it’s often the single biggest reason campaigns plateau.

Giving up too early

Google Ads campaigns need a bit of runway to gather data before they really start performing well — the algorithm is learning what works. A lot of businesses pause or completely change a campaign after just a few days because “it’s not working,” when really it hadn’t been given a fair shot yet.

That said, this cuts both ways — we’re not saying just throw money at it and wait forever. The key is watching the right numbers (cost per lead, not just clicks) and making small, informed adjustments rather than scrapping everything and starting over every week.

What actually moves the needle

If we had to boil it down: tight, relevant targeting, a landing page that matches what the ad promised, a CTA nobody can miss, and tracking that actually tells you what’s working. Get those four right, and most of the “Google Ads doesn’t work for my business” feeling tends to disappear.

Lead generation isn’t about spending more — it’s about spending smarter on the stuff that actually connects with people ready to buy. We help businesses figure this out without the jargon, and without pretending there’s a magic setting that fixes everything overnight.
